Ubuntu 12.04: Games

I am not a big gamer, but I have found a few games that I do enjoy from time to time.  So, this is a quick list of the games that I installed as part of my installation.

0 A.D.

I just ran across this article:

I Love Ubuntu: 0 A.D. Alpha 8 Haxāmaniš released with consistent additions

The screenshots and graphics are what caught my eye, and I decided to give it a try.  It is an easy install after adding the repository, and then watch out: it will waste your time!

Here are the commands that I used to install it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install 0ad

Super Tux Racer

This is a fun game that I have enjoyed for a while.  My son really enjoys playing it as well.  The open source characters are fun and creative.  It also has challenges where you can unlock tracks.

It is in the repository, so you can install it from the Software Center.

They also have a tutorial for creating tracks, but we’ll see if I get the time to do it.  It looks like it would be fun to do, but it requires learning some new applications.

Also, I have waited so long to publish this, and now, I have had time to play with the version that installs with Ubuntu 12.10.  It includes a multi-player feature!

Hedgewars

In college, I had some friends that had a game called Worms.  It was a fun multi-player hot seat game.  Hedgewars seems to work the same.  I haven’t spent much time with it, but it seemed fun.  I tried playing it with my nephew and son, but I noticed a few words that I didn’t think they should be around.  I haven’t gone back to see if it has changed or no.

Super Tux

Super Tux is another one that we have enjoyed.  It goes right along with the Super Tux Kart although I don’t think they are related in any way.

The game plays like Super Mario.  It’s side scrolling with similar levels.

Neverball

Neverball is another game that I enjoyed a while back.  It was similar to a labyrinth on steriods.  You would control the board with your mouse, so you need good mouse and balance skills.

Chrome Games

Now, while we are listing games, don’t forget the Chrome Web Store.  These games are just as good as the full desktop ones, so I don’t see why they can’t make the list.  Poppit and Entanglement have given me some entertainment.  You can’t forget Angry Birds.  That’s been a huge hit in our family.
